We were approached by an important export customer, operating in the nuclear waste disposal industry, who required a solution to neutralize hazardous, potentially lethal nuclear sludges with cementitious powders.

The unit required to be totally customized to suit all operation requirements, in terms of design, safety, sizing, operation… in other words entirely tailor-made for their plant layout.

The mixer had to be of specific dimensions (disposal of the unit itself will be, just like for the neutralized product, in a ‘standard’ concrete box, once all sludges will have been handled). All mixer components exceeding maximum allowed dimensions needed to be quickly and safely disassembled. All materials and welds needed to be certified. All documentation had to be filed and produced before manufacturing operations. Inlets and inlet lid required to be made to exact customer design. Thicknesses of major structural parts were increased. Extra safety accessories had to be included; the entire unit was built according to worst-case scenario parameters.

The unit we took as a basic starting point was our KBC750, suitable for handling 500 litres of product for this particular application, but capable of restarting under full load conditions (750 litres) in case of an emergency. It was re-designed completely to fit in the concrete box designed by the customer. The unit’s main features are:

  • Mixer made entirely in mild steel, extra high thickness, with material certification for each steel plate/item used. All structural and containment welds certified and mag-tested to meet quality standards.
  • Solid main shaft in mild steel.
  • Bolted blades and scrapers in mild steel.
  • 1 complete lid with inlets, pipes, sockets and pins as per customer drawing (NDTs performed on the lid as well, for all welds)
  • 1 extra large square outlet, with pneumatic actuation and mechanical safety lock
  • 1 inspection door, with electromechanical door lock, with key
  • custom-built feet and lifting eyes
  • 1 chain drive, easily and quickly removable, with an 18.5 kW motor
