NUCLEAR WASTE NEUTRALIZATION

KB1SC00750PB-SPX

The Challenge

We were contacted by a major player in the nuclear waste disposal and neutralisation industry. The request was for a system to process and neutralise hazardous, toxic, and radioactive waste materials using cement powder and aggregates.

The mixer had to be custom-built to meet a significant number of operational constraints, covering footprint and dimensions as well as performance, operation, and construction. In other words, a fully engineered solution tailored precisely to the client's specifications.

The machine's physical dimensions were critical and non-negotiable, as the entire unit is decommissioned and disposed of inside a specially made concrete container at the end of its lifecycle. Any components exceeding the maximum allowable dimensions must be quick and easy to disassemble. All welds and materials of construction require full certification. Copies of all manufacturing documentation must be made available to the client for verification prior to each production phase. All inlets - and their covers - must be fabricated to rigorous technical specifications. All material thicknesses need to be increased to raise the safety factor, in line with specific project requirements. The unit requires additional fail-safe safety accessories, while being engineered according to the "worst-case scenario" philosophy.

The MC² Solution

  • Starting from a standard KBC750 model, capable of handling 500 litres of product, at the same time capable of re-starting on an emergency (or erroneous) full load of 750 litres, the mixer was heavily re-designed to meet the dimensional requirements dictated by the application and customer needs.
  • Mixer model: KB1SC00750PB-SPX batch mixer
  • Material of construction: extra heavy-thickness (increased) mild steel, material certification for each metal sheet used, all welds (structural and non-structural) certified and tested according to NDTs (magnetic particle test)
  • Maximum working capacity: 2,165 litres
  • Solid mild steel rotor shaft
  • Mixing tools: adjustable, bolted blades and scrapers made of mild steel
  • 1 off. lid with custom inlets, pipes, connections according to customer drawing (non-destructive tests on these parts were performed as well)
  • 1 off. extra-large rectangular discharge outlet featuring flush-fit trapdoor with electropneumatic actuation and additional mechanical fail-safe lock
  • 1 off. frontal inspection door equipped with safety interlock
  • End plates with custom built lifting eyes and feet
  • Chain drive, with quick disassembling system, and 18.5 kW electric motor

Key Benefits

  • Completely customised solution to suit customer requirements (design, dimensions, safety systems, drive quick disassembly solution)
  • Fast homogenisation of materials in total safety conditions
  • Extra-high safety measures (including increased thicknesses of steel plates for proper isolation of radioactive materials)
  • Construction quality certified and guaranteed by specific non-destructive tests on all welds and joins potentially at risk for leaks
  • Excellent ROI
