The Challenge

For a client looking to process small batches of edible colour premixes for cake and confectionery decorations, we were requested to supply a 240-litre batch mixing station. The system must blend various types of food-grade powder colorants, achieving an exceptionally high level of homogenisation.

Furthermore, because the facility handles small-scale production runs for numerous different clients, recipe changeovers are extremely frequent. This necessitates frequent drum sanitisation and washdowns to thoroughly remove any colour traces from the previous batch.

While the mixer is operated completely manually for loading, mixing, and discharge processes, recipe management is fully automated, controlled via the mixer's PLC and seamlessly integrated with the client's ERP software

The proposed solution had to be a comprehensive, turnkey package, delivered completely ready for immediate operation within their production laboratories.

The MC² Solution

  • Mixing tools: blades and scrapers made of 304L stainless steel directly welded to the main shaft
  • 1 off. loading/inspection door on mixing drum top, complete with interlock
  • 1 off. flanged round vent port on loading/inspection door, complete with 304L stainless steel cage and filter sleeve
  • 1 off. round, flanged discharge outlet, with flush-fit trapdoor with electropneumatic actuation
  • 1 off. side refiner with blade-type tools, 4 kW (1450 rpm) e-motor
  • 1 off. adjustable injection wand with spray nozzle
  • 1 off. on-board 8-litre liquid reservoir tank
  • 1 off. pneumatic cabinet in 304L stainless steel for the distribution of compressed air
  • Finishing of all parts in contact with product: satin polishing with Ra ≤0.8μm
  • 1 off. on-board control panel, complete with PLC, touchscreen, main shaft motor inverter, software to control all operations (main shaft speed, refiner, discharge) and monitor all safety devices (interlocks, pneumatic cabinet), as well as store and program recipes. The control panel is built to be conform with the Industry 4.0 requirements.
  • Direct drive, directly flanged to the unit’s end plate, complete with a 7.5 kW electric motor
  • 304L stainless steel supporting frame, on castors, with 4 off. integrated load cells that continually monitor the mixer weight.
  • ATEX declaration of conformity to zones 22/22 (internal/external) according to ATEX II 3/3D Ex h IIIC T135°C DcDc
