The Challenge

We were contacted by a major international player engaged in the production of insulating and fire-retardant foams for subsea pipelines within the petrochemical sector. They requested the supply of a batch ploughshare mixer capable of processing at least 2,000 litres per batch.

Receiving highly non-homogenous materials across both solid and liquid phases, the mixer must perfectly blend all ingredients within the shortest possible cycle times. We were also requested to supply the entire control system, covering both the unit itself and the pumps used to transfer the liquids into the mixing drum.

The unit had to be equipped with multiple compartmented inlets and vent ports, positive-pressure (pumped) feed systems for both powders and liquids, two electropneumatic discharge outlets, side refiners, an oversized inspection door, a manual sight-glass/sampling port, and an automated high-pressure internal drum washdown system.

The MC² Solution

  • Material of construction: all parts built in high thickness 316L stainless steel
  • Maximum working capacity: 2,180 litres
  • Solid 316L stainless steel rotor shaft, with air-purged seals
  • Mixing tools: blades and scrapers made of 316L stainless steel directly welded to the shaft
  • 3 off. flanged round inlets with compartmental butterfly valves and filter sleeves
  • 1 off. flanged round vent port with compartmental butterfly valve and filter sleeve
  • 3 off. liquid ports
  • 2 off. loading ports on end plates for powders
  • 2 off. flanged, round discharge outlet, with flush-fit trapdoor, with independent electropneumatic actuation
  • 1 extra-large inspection door with interlock
  • 3 off. side refiners with blade-type tools in 316L stainless steel, 7.5 kW (2900 rpm) motors
  • 3 off. automated high-pressure, electro-pneumatically retractable washdown systems, with rotating nozzle
  • 1 off. pneumatic cabinet in 304L stainless steel for the distribution of compressed air to all air-driven appliances
  • Finishing of all parts in contact with product: satin polishing to a Ra ≤0.8μm
  • 1 off. 304L stainless steel junction box
  • 1 off. control panel complete with PLC, touchscreen, inverter for main motor to control all mixing operations and monitor all safeties and emergencies, as well as controlling the pumps (not in the mixer scope) used to pump powders and liquids into the mixing drum
  • Separate drive, in right-angle layout, with flexible pin coupling, complete with a 55 kW electric motor.
