The Challenge

For a new plant producing premium-quality leavening agents, we were approached to supply a 1,700-litre batch stainless steel ploughshare mixer/reactor.

The unit must be equipped with circular inlets and vent ports, side refiners to maximise micro-ingredient homogenisation, and injection lances for liquid and oil additions.

Furthermore, certain recipes require a thermal jacket for product heating alongside a construction capable of withstanding absolute negative pressure.

Finally, due to the characteristics of certain ingredients, the mixer required full compliance certification for ATEX Zone 20 (internal) and Zone 22 (external) hazardous areas.

The MC² Solution

  • Mixer model: KBR3PC01700DCD batch mixer
  • Material of construction: all parts built in high thickness 316L stainless steel, reinforced to resist up to -0.9 Barg
  • Maximum working capacity: 1,740 litres
  • Solid 316L stainless steel rotor shaft, with air-purged seals
  • Mixing tools: ploughs and scrapers made of 316L stainless steel directly welded to the shaft
  • 2 off. flanged round inlets
  • 1 off. flanged round vent port
  • 1 off. flanged, round discharge outlet, with flush-fit trapdoor, with electropneumatic actuation
  • 2 off. inspection doors with interlocks
  • 3 off. side refiners with blade-type tools in 316L stainless steel, 5.5 kW (1450 rpm) electric motor
  • 3 off. adjustable injection wands in 316L stainless steel, complete with spray nozzles
  • Finishing of all parts in contact with product: satin polishing to a Ra ≤0.8μm
  • Temperature jacket for use with water/diathermal oil in 304L stainless steel, complete with PT100 temperature probe and full drum insulation
  • Separate drive, in right-angle layout, with flexible pin coupling, complete with a 45 kW electric motor
  • Mixer built in compliance with ATEX II 1/3D Ex h IIIC T135°C DaDc regulations
